Night vision spy cameras use infrared LED arrays to illuminate a scene with light invisible to the human eye, allowing the camera to capture clear footage in complete darkness. The camera sensor responds to IR wavelengths while human vision does not — meaning the infrared hidden camera records clearly in a pitch-dark room while remaining completely undetectable by anyone in that room. Night vision activates automatically when ambient light drops below a threshold, typically switching the feed from color (daytime) to black-and-white (nighttime IR mode).
Infrared cameras use either 850nm or 940nm LEDs. The 850nm type is more common and produces a barely visible faint red glow at close range — not noticeable from a normal viewing distance in typical room conditions, but visible in complete darkness if someone is looking directly at the camera. The 940nm no-glow spy cam produces zero visible emission under any conditions — the most covert option for environments where the camera's location might be observed at night.

Night vision range specifications measure the distance at which the camera can produce usable footage in complete darkness. A 5-meter IR range covers a standard bedroom, nursery, or small office effectively. A 10-meter range covers larger living rooms, open-plan offices, and retail spaces. A 15-meter range is appropriate for larger areas like warehouses, garages, or outdoor covered spaces.
In practice, night vision footage quality degrades toward the far edge of the rated range — faces are clearly identifiable at 60–70% of the stated distance, with recognizable but less detailed footage at the full range. XXSCAM tests night vision performance on every infrared hidden camera listed: we record in a fully dark environment at the specified range and evaluate footage on a calibrated display before listing. Models that do not meet their stated range specifications are not carried.
The choice between 850nm and 940nm infrared technology is the most important decision when buying a no-glow spy cam or infrared hidden camera. Standard 850nm IR LEDs are the industry default: effective, inexpensive, and used in the majority of night vision cameras. At close range in a completely dark room, the LEDs produce a very faint red glow that is visible to someone looking directly at the camera housing. At normal room distances and in rooms with any ambient light from windows or electronics, this glow is undetectable.
For situations where the camera's location could be observed in darkness — by a subject who might look directly at camera positions — 940nm IR is the right choice. The 940nm no-glow spy cam produces absolutely no visible emission under any conditions. The tradeoff is slight: 940nm cameras typically have somewhat shorter effective night vision range than comparable 850nm models at the same LED count. XXSCAM specifies the IR wavelength on every infrared hidden camera listing.
