Personal body cameras are wearable hidden cameras designed to record from a first-person perspective while concealed on or within clothing, accessories, or everyday carry items. Unlike law enforcement body cameras — which are large, visible, and intentionally obvious — covert body cameras are designed for complete concealment. Common form factors include button cameras, clip-on cameras, badge-style cameras, and cameras integrated into accessories like belt buckles, pins, or brooches.
American buyers use wearable spy cams for workplace documentation, personal safety evidence collection, custody dispute recording, outdoor activity capture, and protection during confrontational situations. A body worn spy camera priced between $35 and $180 USD covers the full range from compact clip cameras to professional-grade extended-battery models.

Battery life is more critical for covert body cameras than for any other spy camera type: a clock or charger camera plugs in and records indefinitely, but a body worn spy camera runs on battery and must last through the situation being documented. Entry-level body cameras run 2–4 hours; premium models reach 6–8 hours. For all-day use, look for models with motion-activated standby that conserves battery between active recording periods.
Resolution: 1080P is the minimum for footage useful as evidence. A wearable spy cam recording at 2K or 4K allows significant digital zoom without pixelation — valuable when reviewing footage to identify faces or read text. Form factor: button cameras and clip cameras are the most concealable. Badge cameras are visible but appear to be standard ID credentials. The right covert body camera form factor depends on your clothing, the context, and how much concealment is necessary.
Button cameras replace an actual shirt or jacket button — the camera is threaded into place exactly as the original button, and from any distance looks identical. For formal business settings, a button camera on a suit jacket or dress shirt is the least detectable option. Clip cameras attach inside a collar, lapel, or bag strap using a spring clip, with the lens pointing through a small gap in fabric — good for outdoor situations where quick repositioning is useful.
Badge cameras are worn on a lanyard like an ID badge and are visible but appear to be credentials rather than recording equipment — appropriate in environments where visible identification is expected. For confrontational situations where rapid activation is critical, choose a body worn spy camera with single-press start that activates without removing the device from concealment. Most covert body cameras store footage on internal memory or a microSD card and transfer to a computer via USB.
Personal covert body cameras in the United States operate under the same legal framework as other recording devices. Recording video in public — streets, parks, public buildings — is legal throughout the US under First Amendment protections. Recording in a private workplace is governed by your employer's policies and state privacy law; check both before using a wearable spy cam at work.
The audio dimension is again the most legally sensitive area: one-party consent states permit recording conversations you participate in; two-party consent states including California, Florida, Illinois, Pennsylvania, and others require all parties to agree. Recording conversations between other people that you are not party to is illegal in virtually all US jurisdictions. For personal safety documentation — recording your own interaction with another person — you are generally a party to the conversation and one-party consent applies in most states.
